Okay. I did it. I sent child #1 to an overnight camp. Without (his) parental supervision. It was a horrible horrible ... hooooorrrrible week. I worried and fretted all week over whether he was having fun, if he had friends, if he was going to lose clothing, if he was showering, if he was having fun, if he had friends, if he was wearing sun block, if he had hurt himself, if he was eating enough, if he was having fun. Phew. That was a lot of worrying.
You will be happy to know that Mason did not have a HORRIBLE week. He actually had the time of his life. He slept in a covered wagon, he hung out with his bunk mates, he ziplined, swam, learned archery, swam, learned "Survivor" skills, shot a paintball gun at a target, swam, went to the store, watched funny skits, learned crazy songs, made food packets for the hungry, and swam some more. Did I mention he went swimming?
You will also be proud to know that he left with 8 pairs of undies and came home with 8 pairs of undies. We only lost one shirt. We also only showered once (with our swim shorts on). He claims to of brushed his teeth a few times. He came home with three or four layers of grime and a bit of a sunburn... but had a fabulous time! He actually was quite disappointed that we were there to retrieve him... he had hoped to stay for a month. Sadly, this mama's heart just isn't ready for that!
He also brought home a very nasty flu bug. I'm just thankful it hit while he was home and not at camp. Oh what a disaster that would have been!!
A little about the camp: Indian Hills is a camp in Jamul CA. Every summer they put on three weeks of camps for kids going into 3-6 grade. And one week for Jr. High. The cost of camp ... FREE. In 2008 the Board of Indian Hills CAmp took a step of faith with the ultimate objective that every child should attend camp for free... "so that we are not charging children to hear about Christ." Registration opened in May. I threw Mason's name in... it's a lottery system... and crossed my fingers. Sure enough... three weeks later I received a confirmation email that MasDog was signed up for July 1-6th. I had mixed emotions. I really wasn't sure I was ready for this step. However, we knew lots of "young adults" that have volunteered and interned at Indian Hills... and being in the camping world... we had heard wonderful things. So, I cut the cord... and let him go. **sniff sniff**. My baby is growing up.
